Ukigumo means "floating clouds" and it's aptly named. If you have a ridge or hill where a special tree might at times be backlighted by the sun, this is the plant to choose. Ukigumo is an elegant and dignified tree, and the green and cream/white leaves seem quite thin-to-transparent when backlighted, when the leaves indeed appear to float. I so like Ukigumo that I have three of them, and none disappoint.
It's in my Top Ten also. Ukigumo just gets better and better as it grows. Though it's not a showy blast-of-color tree, it's exquisitely beautiful in its own more subtle way. And on a hot day, looking at these floating white and light green delicate leaves just makes you feel cool and serene. While I don't have a relative in the nursery trade, I do have some good friends who are fine nurserymen!
After removing a thicket from a canyon behind our home in 2003, we started learning about Japanese maples, became obsessed by them, and now have about 400 different varieties of Japanese maples. Each year we find new and wonderful varieties, meet other maple collectors and growers, and our garden has become a sensation.

Anyone with three Ukigumos must have an uncle in the Nursery trade! It is in my top ten upright Acer Palmatums.
