Golden Pond 5/7/05

This rare cultivar has unique spring colors as seen in this photo. It unfortunately is a favorite of the deer.

Golden Pond is a divine plant. So divine, in fact, that I cannot seem to keep the deer from devouring it. As you can see from the spring foliage, the coloring is lovely and subtle. It's not a particularly showy plant, but it does have a subtle beauty about it that is well worth noticing. This year I have a cage around this tree to give it a break from the ravages of deer.

Have you tried Bitrex as an harmless deer repellant

Well, yes, Bitrex seems to work very well. Golden Pond, however, happens to be in a major deer zone and, probably because of its small size, may have escaped the Bitrex spray on occasion. At any rate, the poor thing has been eaten and eaten and consequently it deserves a cage this coming year to keep the animals from foraging on it.
