Katsura 4/6/05
Katsura, the Wig Maple, is an elegant and stately maple with fresh yellow to yellow/orange spring color, a color that goes on for weeks.
Katsura (aka the Wig Maple) is a magnificent addition to the spring garden. It is a dignified upright tree with gorgeous golden yellow leaves in the spring, and the color holds well for several weeks before changing to the green of summer. It has wonderful yellow/gold autumn color as well, though not as intense as the spring.
After removing a thicket from a canyon behind our home in 2003, we started learning about Japanese maples, became obsessed by them, and now have about 400 different varieties of Japanese maples. Each year we find new and wonderful varieties, meet other maple collectors and growers, and our garden has become a sensation.
