My collection of Japanese maples. Click on the photo to enlarge. If you want to view a specific cultivar, enter its name in the search feature in the upper left corner.
Omure Yama is a beautiful maple all year round, but in the autumn of 2006, it was spectacular. The reds, greens and golds of the leaves were vibrant and intense, and given its placement in my garden, with late afternoon back-lighting, it was a true sensation. More than once visitors just stopped to gaze upon this beauty. The fall colors held for a long time (maybe 3 weeks), and I'm glad it has a central place in the front garden. Though Vertrees shows a vertical Omure Yama, we've found you must train the plant to grow up instead of sideways. It's not easy.
After removing a thicket from a canyon behind our home in 2003, we started learning about Japanese maples, became obsessed by them, and now have about 400 different varieties of Japanese maples. Each year we find new and wonderful varieties, meet other maple collectors and growers, and our garden has become a sensation.
