De Shojo 5/7/06

Though the fall colors are pretty rather than dramatic, De Shojo is really best in the spring garden. The new spring leaves are very red and later become a deep pink and teal color, finally going mostly green for summer. This plant has a formidable presence and requires space to be appreciated.

Tamuke Yama 5/20/06

Tamuke Yama is an elegant cascading dissectum leafing out dark red in spring and then turning purple/red, a color it maintains throughout the summer. The fall color is vivid red. While some consider Tamuke Yama relatively ordinary in the maple world, it's a hardy and reliably gorgeous plant which is reason enough to justify its popularity.

Lemon Lime Lace 5/20/06

This happens to have a good name. The leaves take on green, yellow-green, and yellow colorations in the spring. Though not as lacy as other cultivars, it is a pretty plant.

Sagara Nishiki 5/20/06

Sagara Nishiki has lovely variegations of light creamy yellow over pale green matte type leaves. In the spring (this photo was taken May 20, 2006) there is sometimes a hint of pink at the margins. Because of the variegation, this tree requires some shade to avoid leaf scorch.

Heptalobum Rubrum

Brandt's Dwarf 5/20/06

I've been told Brandt's Dwarf is a witches' broom. It begins leafing out reddish-purple in the spring, then goes to dark red. In the summer it shows green with an orange or bronze tinge. The fall color is a bright dark red. Brandt's is a true dwarf and maxes out at about 3 feet high and wide. It's simply lovely.
